Partially completed scene on the Port Kelsey

Since it looks like the layout may have to be dismantled in the coming year I have been hesitant to do any work on it, which is quite frustrating seeing that it has taken me 6 years to get it to this point, where the fun stuff starts. Building the benchwork, backdrops, roadbed, trackwork and endless wiring, I finally got to the part that I have long been waiting for, only to have to face the weighty decision of tearing it all out. It is reduced to a simple decision of keeping the layout and continuing on with its construction, or continuing on with Fast Tracks.

Fast Tracks won.

I figured that the ultimate destination of every model railroad ever built is a big dumpster, the only difference between what I am doing and what I had planned on doing, is the length of time before it hits the dumpster. I might as well keep working on it, at least I can enjoy the process while it lasts, and get a few pictures out of it.

So with this in mind, I spent some of the last few days working on a section of the layout I have been looking forward to completing.

When I painted the backdrops a couple years back, I did a section with a couple shades of orange for a future sunset scene. I wasn’t sure what that scene would be, it varied from time to time from a golf course, to a high trestle, to a bar (not a model bar, a real one, the kind with bottles and stuff), to this final generic scene.

I took a few pictures along the way and have documented the process here….

Weathering a Steam Engine

Weathering ‘ol number 19, a photo essay

I had this engine over at a friends layout last week for an operating session. I had it doubleheaded with PKRY #22 which is a completely weathered engine, and coupled to a shiny out of the box engine it was quite a contrast. So I figured it was time to get it a bit dirty…

I took some pictures along the way so I could share the techniques I use.

This is a Proto 2000 (or P2K as they are known) 0-8-0 I bought last year at a flea market, and was pleasantly surprised to find it had a sound decoder installed in it.

I built this kit over 10 years ago, when I was home for 3 weeks after an unpleasant bout of appendicitis.

Run for Your Life dvd

I consider this Tichy’s most impressive kit. There are hundreds of parts, and I was most impressed how well they all fit together, highly recommended!
