I guess these were called a counterweight building, since this is where the pulleys for the counterweights were supported. This is the HO model from the 3D renderings I have posted the last couple of days.

It is completely laser cut, even the large supports, which were cut from .140 thick basswood. The cross bracing is all cut from .040″ plywood as a single piece, and wood grain added with the edge of a saw. The nail holes were drawn in and done on the laser as it was cut out.

The walls are also .040″ plywood, with the scribing done on the laser. I have not completed the roof, as I still need access to the inside of the building to add the counterweights, and that can’t be done until it is installed in place on the layout. A railing along the front, with a ladder is to be added as well.

The windows and door are cut on the laser from .015″ plywood.

The wood structure at the bottom is all stained with a mix of leather dye and alcohol, to simulate a creosoted wood.

Here are a couple different views of the car ferry equipment design. I have added walkways along the barge at the level of the boxcar doors. For a prototype barge I referred to some images I was able to find online, and some in a book I have, and kind of came up with a hybrid of all of them. Ah, the freedom of a freelance railroad….

Needing a car ferry apron and barge for the dock addition, I decided to draw one up and make it on the laser. Of course, this was before I decided to move, and was still actively working on the layout. I thought I should post some shots of the work I did do on it.

It looks a bit like the Walther’s version, for good reason, I used that as a prototype since they have already done the hard work. I preferred a wood structure over the metal one Walther’s offers, plus, conveniently the laser cuts wood.

The entire structure, apron and barge has been drawn in 3D. The barge is designed to split along the waterline, so I can permanently place it in the water, and simply lift off the top half to exchange with other barge tops, simulating different boats with different loads of cars.

The Savages movies In a Spiral State movie I have cut and built the structure, which I will post some pictures of over the next couple days. The barge has also been cut out and assembled, but not detailed. I still have to cut out and assemble the apron.
