Long Shot

Port Kelsey aerial view

Since I am still working on wiring the town of Gage West (almost complete, more on that later) I figured I would post another shot of some finished scenes….

Now for a shot of reality…

After 2 weeks of pulling wire, the unfinished portion has got a bit messy…

  3. Your pike is an inspiration, if I can get my modular layout to exhibit the degree of detail you have captured here, I will be one happy camper. So will the people that view my layout.

    Keep the photo’s comeing.

  4. I really like your layout, so nice… I wonder if I can ask a question… The picture called Misc-pic-3_1_2.jpg and Module_long_shot_1.jpg

Can you please tell me a little about the material used to make the ballast, grass and gravel. Is it Woodland Scenics? If that’s the case, what colors do you use? And is it fine, medium or coarse? I really want to learn how to make it look realistic like that.

  5. Hi,

The ballast used here is simple sand I gathered from a playground behind my house at the time. I sifted it, to remove the sticks and gum, and dyed it using leather dye and alcohol mixed together. I don’t recall the ratio of alcohol to dye, I think it was simple trial and error until I had a few different shades.

  6. Most impressed with your modeling and your photography. Having been an avid HO modeler since 1948 I have had a few starts but no finishes. ( Was on the cover of RMC March 1953) Am working on my monster now and only hope I can acheive the atmosphere that you have created. Well done. With the help of “Fast Tracks” I have a chance.
    Sincerely, John
